Getting Connected
Goals
This lesson is intended to provide a general understanding of what
is required to access the internet and how to get a computer
connected to the internet. We will instruct trainees in the use of
help systems and wizards, and also identifying the correct source for
information and/or support when configuring an internet
connection.
Enabling Objectives
This lesson will be in the form of a quicktime video which
describes some of the different types of connections as well as
instructing the trainee in correct terminology in order to equip them
to seek help from their particular service provider. Also included
are specific instructions for locating the help files and wizards in
both the Mac and PC environment. Photos of various hardware and
screen captures of help pages and wizards are included to illustrate
the information.
Terminal Objectives
Upon completing this lesson, several terminal objectives will be
attainable:
- Trainees will be able to name the 4 most common types of internet
connections, modem, DSL, cable and Ethernet.
- Trainees will be able to explain the factors to be considered
when deciding on which type of connection to use, such as cost,
speed, and availability.
- Trainees will be able to engage and negotiate a modem set up
wizard.
- Trainees will know what resources (support staff, online help,
help manuals) should be available depending on the chosen
connectivity.
- Trainees will be prepared to answer the form questions they will
encounter in a typical internet connection wizard, and identify where
to go to get the information required to complete a "connection
wizard.".
- Trainees will be prepared to troubleshoot their individual
configurations through the use of troubleshooting wizards, help
menus, and support phone numbers.
- Trainees will be able to distinguish between different types of
connecting cables, and especially to distinguish a phone plug from an
Ethernet plug.
- Trainees will be aware of the differences between an individual
connection and an Ethernet/network connection.
- Trainees will be able to explain what an ISP is and what services
they provide.
- Trainees will be able to name keywords which will lead to the
proper help files for connecting to the internet and configuring a
connection.
